How to Sleep with Lots of Noise
1. Before you go to bed, take a hot bubble bath or have a warm drink to soothe you and make it easier for you to fall to sleep
2. Shut the window if you normally have it open, as closing it blocks out some of the noise.
3. Get into bed and lie in silence, and see how loud the noise sounds. If it is too loud, try putting on low music to block out the outside noise.
4. Close your eyes and think of something else. Try to imagine the sound not there. Just try to forget about the sound. Maybe imagine a something happening, or write a story in your head. Try to picture a scene of a movie or something, just do something to distract yourself.
5. Count. If you're alone, count aloud to high numbers. Think more about the counting than the noise that's keeping you awake. Count very, very high, until you get very, very, very bored and sleepy.
6. If it is still too loud, and it is a neighbor's party, go and ask them if they would mind turning down their music/being quieter. Be nice and tell them that you understand they are having a party, but you would really appreciate some noise relief as you need your sleep.
7. If the noise is something else, such as a thunderstorm or other natural noises, try earplugs.
8.Think about sleeping in another room. If your living room is any quieter and the noise is low enough in there to sleep, move your quilt and pillows to the living room and sleep on the sofa.
9. Fight noise with noise. Find a boom-box, or the equivalent, and set it up in your room, only tune it to a non-station. In other words, tune it to a channel that is only static, and turn it up as loud as possible. It should drown out all the other noise, but it will be so random that you will still be able to get some sleep. A fan will achieve the same purpose. You can also purchase a white noise generator that will produce sounds such as that of rain, a whitewater stream, or surf. You can even find free white noise files online.
10. Lie in bed and get as comfortable as possible. Make sure your feet are warm, and that you have enough pillows to support your head. Then, lie there and think about things. Eventually, you will fall asleep, even if it takes a long time. It often seems to help if you think about staying awake!
11. Relax, lying there - how? Think of and slightly flex (move) each area starting with your toes, then feet, then ankles, calves, knees, thighs,... continuing upward one part at a time, to the top of your scalp/head.
12. Breathe slowly and deeply. Try counting to yourself, such as:
"1001, 1002, 1003, 1004; hold 1001, 1002; exhale 1001, 1002, 1003, pushing out that last bit of breath, on 1004!" Repeat that kind of breathing.
